Dataset Security in the Age of AI and Quantum


This talk reviews some of the key cybersecurity challenges that arise from AI and Quantum. Advances in Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing have emerged as key priorities for both the U.S. National Science Foundation and scientific research in general. Some of these challenges are well understood by the community. For example, the need to incorporate post-quantum algorithms, while not trivial, is relatively well known and the subject of guidance issued in June. Other challenges raise still unresolved questions and the direction forward is arguably not yet well understood. In particular, should the techniques used to curate datasets change due to emerging use of AI?

Daniel Massey

Daniel Massey is a Supervising Computer Scientist in the Networking and Cybersecurity Division at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute (USC ISI). He has more than 25 years of research, academic, and program-management experience and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in networking and cybersecurity. His current research focuses on the security and resilience of emerging networks.

Dr. Massey previously served as a Program Director in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, where he led the Department of Defense’s Operate Through 5G Initiative. At the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, he developed and managed research programs in distributed denial-of-service defense and cyber-physical systems security. His contributions also include early work on Named Data Networking, serving as a co-editor of the DNS Security standards, and helping develop the K–12 Cybersecurity Education Framework.

Dr. Massey has held faculty positions at the University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State University. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science from UCLA and his M.A. in Applied Mathematics and B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science from UC San Diego.
